How To Find Colours That Suit Your Skin Tone

To fully understand your personal Colour Profile, there are a few characteristics of colour that will assist you to work out which colour tones you are.

The Four Colour Personalities

The Four Colour Personalities is a system that I developed. This system has been perfected over the years as our knowledge has expanded, and I am proud to share it with you.

There are four colour personalities for you to determine which personality you are.

The colour personalities are Rich, Pastel, Vibrant and Earth. The aim is to determine which of the above four suits your skin tone. Then, you can learn how to apply this information to your wardrobe.

It would help if you eliminated it to find out which one suits you best.

Temperature

Temperature defines a colour's undertone, which may be cool or warm. Yellow-based colours are perceived as warm. Pink/Blue-based colours are perceived as cool.

Does your skin have a yellow undertone or pink/blue undertone? If not sure, ask someone you know. Once you see yellow or pink, you will notice it constantly.

If your temperature is cool (pink), you can eliminate Vibrant and Earth; you will be either Rich or Pastel.

If your temperature is warm (yellow), you can eliminate Rich and Pastel; you will be either Vibrant or Earth.

Next, we need to work out what intensity your skin is. Keep looking in the mirror.

Intensity

Intensity indicates the purity or clarity of a colour. It shows whether the colour appears clear or muted.

Clear colours appear bright and vibrant and reflect the light. Muted colours are dusty and matte and absorb the light.

Is your skin shiny and clear, or matt and muted?

If your temperature is cool and your intensity is clear, your colour personality is Rich.

If your temperature is cool, and your intensity is muted, then your colour personality is Pastel.

If your temperature is warm, and your intensity is clear, your colour personality is Vibrant.

If your temperature is warm, and your intensity is muted, your colour personality is Earth.

Rich Colour Profile

You have a cool temperature and clear intensity in your skin tones. You look great in vibrant, clear and bold winter colours. Avoid dusty or dull colours, as these will drain you.

Rich Profiles have the following qualities:

• High contrast between skin, hair and eyes (i.e. very pale with black/brown hair)
• Intense eyes (charcoal grey, blue, bright blue, violet, emerald green, black, black-brown, dark hazel)
• Deep-coloured hair with cool undertones such as ash or blue (no red or gold highlights)
• Pink or blue skin undertones
• The best colours consist of deep, rich, and vivid (i.e. jewel tones) and, in contrast, bright white and icy pastels
• The worst colours are earthy, muted and powdery, which will wash you out.

Because your overall look is cool and pink, select clothes with a cool undertone (pink/blue). You will look best in clear and shiny colours (reflect the light).

Pastel Colour Profile

You have a cool temperature and muted intensity in your skin tones. You look great in light, creamy Pastel but not bright, muted, slightly toned down colours.

Pastel Colour Profiles have the following qualities:

• Low contrast between skin and hair
• Pale green, blue, grey or hazel eyes
• Hair with cool undertones such as ash or blue (no red or gold highlights), naturally blonde or very light pale eyelashes
• The best colours consist of cool, soft, dusty and muted colours
• The worst colours consist of bold, intense, clear, and rich colours as they overwhelm the face and will look far too jarring and harsh

Because your overall look is cool and pink, select clothes with a cool undertone (pink/blue). You will look best in matt and muted colours (absorb the light) and light in depth.

You look gorgeous in pink, ice or electric blues, turquoise, greys and gentle pastels. Restrained, reserved, calm, quiet colours that are subdued.

Vibrant Colour Profile

You have a warm temperature and clear intensity in your skin tones. You look great in bright, bold, vivid, brilliant, intense, vibrant, clear colours. Think of the bright, clear colours of the spring flowers.

Vibrant Profiles have the following qualities;

• Low contrast between skin and hair
• Eye colour ranging from blue to dark brown
• Light blond to medium brown hair with warm gold and red highlights
• Skin with warm gold or peach undertones 
• The best colours consist of bright, vivid and clear colours with warm undertones (i.e. olive green, bronze)
• The worst colours consist of crisp white and dark. Intense colours near the face will look too dense and will contrast too much, while muted colours will look too muddy

Because your overall look is warm, select clothes with a warm undertone (yellow). You will look best in clear and shiny colours (reflect the light).

Earth Colour Profile

You have a warm temperature and muted intensity in your skin tones. You look great in courageous but not bright, muted, burnished, spicy, slightly toned down colours.

Earth Profiles have the following qualities:

• Earthy-coloured eyes (light to dark brown, hazel, green, dark blue)
• Deep-coloured hair with warm undertones of red or gold (deep golden blonde, red, auburn, medium to deep brown, natural black with red undertones). Red tones in any shade from strawberry blonde to auburn
• Skin with warm yellow, porcelain or peach undertones (ivory, beige, olive, bronze) with a golden glow. Possibly an abundance of freckles
• The best colours consist of spicy, earthy, and golden (i.e. fall foliage and spices) in both rich and muted tones
• Worst colours consist of clear, bright colours, bright white (near the face especially) and true pastels will wash you out and make you look sallow.

Because your overall look is warm and golden, select clothes with a warm undertone (yellow). You will look best in colours that are matte and muted.
